There aren’t many perks to bowing out before the playoffs really get going.

Maxime Crépeau will say, however, that getting an extra month from an already short MLS offseason doesn’t come without a plus or two.

“When you go deep into the playoffs it’s a fast turnaround and it can take a toll on yourself,” Crépeau said. “But in the position that we are in, everybody should be fresh and ready to go.”

The MLS offseason is ridiculously short. The Timbers, who fell to Vancouver 5-0 in the play-in round, had just over two months of break before training camp began this January. The winning teams — such as the 2024 champion LA Galaxy — had about a month.

That’s the type of schedule Crépeau had grown used to in his career. The second-year Portland keeper came to the Rose City after a two-year stint with LAFC where Crépeau reached consecutive MLS Cup finals.

“This was the first real break that I’ve had in three years,” he said. “It was very good, very beneficial… to arrive here fresh mentally and physically.”

In 2025, Crépeau is looking for consistency.
