No, the Portland manager did not want an umbrella. Not after going winless for nearly two months.

BEAVERTON — Phil Neville welcomed the misery.

Tuesday’s training session was a slog, an hour-and-a-half-long punishment from the football gods for yet another week without a victory. It rained, the temperatures hovered below 50 degrees and, clad in shorts, Neville declined an umbrella as he met with the media after training ended.

It was pouring and Neville seemed tired of pretending otherwise.

“Even though we’re not winning and we’re either drawing or losing, we’ve been receiving a lot of plaudits for the way that we play, the way that we attack and that we’re exciting,” Neville said. “And to be honest with you, after the game Saturday, the first thing I thought was I was getting a little bit fed up with that.

“I want people to praise us for winning games of football, not for playing well and losing.”
