Yogi Roth's preseason Pac-12 primer
Shane Hoffmann caught up with the Pac-12 analyst before media day to download his thoughts on the Ducks, Beavers and the rest of the conference.
Yogi Roth returned from vacation in South Korea last weekend. He spent nearly a month there adventuring with his wife, in-laws and two children.
Even the industry’s sharpest need some time to reset.
“I've known that for 20 years,” Roth, 41, said.
Down time looks different for Roth, the Pac-12 Network’s do-it-all star — broadcaster analyst, filmmaker, author — than most, though.
After days spent carrying his 3-year-old on hikes and across cities, Roth spent his evenings pouring through articles, adjusting, as best he could, to the 13-hour time difference. He read everything, every night. And, for the record, he feels caught up. Enough so, that by the time he boarded his flight home he didn’t sleep a wink, instead reading (yes, more) and writing about college football ahead of Pac-12 Media Day.
The end product: A 30-page word document chalk full of storylines, personnel notes, staffing changes, and much, much, more — Roth’s Pac-12 Preseason Football Almanac, if you will.
I caught up with Roth this week as he gave me a speedrun through his notes. Here are a few things that stood out about each Pac-12 program:
